Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 25, 2021 (SKNIS): The manufacturing and export sectors in St. Kitts and Nevis are on the rebound as global economic activity picks up following the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, shared figures that show “signs of a strong comeback” as most manufacturing entities in the Federation resume operations.
“Records from the Customs and Excise Department reveal that the dollar value of merchandise exports increased to $58.6 million for the period January to July 2021 from $53 million in 2020 for an increase of 10.6 percent,” Dr. Harris stated at his monthly press conference on August 24, 2021, at the NEMA Conference Room.
He reported that the exports are mainly generated by the manufacturing sector singling out companies such as API Harowe (St. Kitts) Ltd, Jaro Ltd, Kajola Kristada Ltd, Carib Brewery (St. Kitts-Nevis) Ltd, St. Kitts Brush Company, and Demerara Distillers (St. Kitts and Nevis) Ltd.
The prime minister also noted that more than 1,200 persons are out to work at various companies. As such, they are in a better position to provide for their families while contributing to the economic activity in the twin-island Federation.
The manufacturing sector has consistently been a key contributor to the economic success of St. Kitts and Nevis. -30-
