Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 6, 2023 (SKNIS): The Department of Constituency Empowerment is using its resources and focusing its efforts on sustainable development within the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis by partnering with the Solid Waste Management Corporation and the Department of Environment.
Director in the Department of Constituency, Colincia Levine said on Infocus on July 5 “We must be cognizant of the fact that St. Kitts is moving towards a small island sustainable state.” She added, “Part of that is environmental consciousness and part of making this step is behavioral change especially where the environment is concerned.”
“We felt that one of our inaugural activities should make a step towards the sustainable small island state and we feel proud of the activity we have embarked on and from the feedback we feel that we have taken a step in that direction and we are happy to be a part of the lead as we move St. Kitts and Nevis in that direction,” she said.
Constituency Empowerment Support Officer Derick Fyfield said that the Federation is a step behind the other Caribbean territories in its single-use plastic policy and stated that one of the initiatives by the department was to further the no plastic Monday in the months of June and July as the department seeks to have St. Kitts and Nevis transition into the plastic-free policy.
The campaign also encompassed dialogue with various stakeholders that targeted environmental concerns, a media tour, awareness tents and a volunteer recruitment drive aimed at making the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis more environmentally conscious.
