Basseterre, Saint Kitts, October 21, 2026 (SKNIS): Acting Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has emphasised the need to build a more resilient and diversified economy, highlighting strategic investment in water security, renewable energy, agriculture and local enterprise as essential to the Federation’s long-term development.
Delivering the keynote address at the Budget 2027 National Forum, on October 20, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, Acting Prime Minister Dr. Hanley noted that global economic uncertainty, rising import costs and changing weather patterns reinforce the importance of strengthening the country’s capacity to withstand external shocks.
The latest projections anticipate economic growth of 2.6 per cent in 2026, followed by average annual growth of 3.5 per cent between 2027 and 2030.
“The achievement of these projections will depend upon investment, sound management, productive enterprise and our ability to respond to changing circumstances,” Dr. Hanley stated.
The acting prime minister identified renewable energy and reliable water supplies as critical priorities, noting that investments in these areas must translate into dependable services, improved energy security and more predictable costs for households and businesses.
He also highlighted opportunities in construction, tourism, agriculture and fishing, emphasising the importance of connecting local farmers, workers, suppliers and entrepreneurs to the benefits of economic activity. Agriculture and fishing are projected to grow by an average of 7.9 per cent annually over the medium term.
Dr. Hanley stressed that realising these opportunities requires practical support for producers, stronger links between farmers and buyers, and greater investment in the skills needed to support emerging industries.
As minister of education, he further emphasised the importance of aligning education and technical training with employment opportunities, ensuring that young people are equipped to contribute to the country’s development.
“For me, one important measure of progress is whether a young person can look ahead and see a future worth working towards in Saint Kitts and Nevis,” he said.
The forum brought together stakeholders from the private sector, civil service, non-governmental organisations, student bodies and community groups to contribute recommendations towards shaping the 2027 National Budget.
Acting Prime Minister Dr. Hanley called for practical proposals that strengthen local enterprise, expand employment opportunities and ensure public investment delivers lasting benefits.
