Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis — The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis is pleased to announce the launch of the official Independence 43 Calendar of Activities, marking the countdown to the Federation’s 43rd Anniversary of Independence on September 19, 2026. Held under the theme “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility: Independence 43,” this year’s calendar invites every citizen, resident and member of the global Saint Kitts and Nevis family to take part in a season that honours the nation’s past, celebrates its present and looks with confidence toward its future.
Forty-three years ago, the twin-island Federation took its place among the sovereign nations of the world — a small nation with an outsized spirit, forged by the resilience of its people. Each year, the Independence calendar is more than a schedule of events; it is a living reminder of the sacrifice and vision that carried Saint Kitts and Nevis to nationhood and of the shared responsibility to carry that legacy forward.
The season opens on a note of solemn remembrance, with the MV Christena Disaster Memorial Service in Nevis on August 1st, honouring the memory of those lost in the nation’s darkest maritime tragedy.
From there, the calendar builds steadily toward Independence Day, weaving together reflection and celebration in equal measure.
Among the highlights:
- CONVERSATIONS: Reflections & The Way Forward — a four-part dialogue series beginning August 19, engaging citizens on national identity, the country’s future by 2045, its influence on the world stage and the aspirations of its young people.
- National Colours Day, observed on five successive Fridays beginning August 28, as citizens don green, yellow, red, white and black in turn, honouring each colour of the national flag.
- National Tree Planting Day (August 29) and the return of Caribbean Premier League cricket, as the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots take the field throughout late August and early September.
- The 28th Prime Minister’s Lecture Series and Cabinet School Visits across both islands, alongside the start of the new school year on September 7.
- National Heroes’ Day (September 16), featuring wreath-laying ceremonies, community flag-raisings and national tribute across St. Kitts and Nevis.
- Patriotic Day (September 18), a vibrant showcase of school treats, fairs and community pride, as the nation dresses in its colours ahead of the big day.
- Independence Day itself (September 19), marked by ceremonial parades in both Saint Kitts and Nevis and a Toast to the Nation.
- A closing stretch of youth and cultural programming, including the National Youth Rally, the Independence Drill Competition, the Elocution Contest, and the Night of Dance on October 25, bringing the season to its finale.
Throughout the calendar, private and community-organised fringe events — church breakfasts, gospel concerts, drag races, calypso extravaganzas and neighbourhood celebrations — add colour and texture to the official programme, a reflection of a people who take genuine ownership of their independence.
Dr. Marcus L. Natta and Ms. Viera Galloway, Co-Chairs of the Independence 43 Organising Committee, reflected on the significance of this year’s calendar:
“Forty-three years ago, our forebears stood on the threshold of nationhood and chose to believe in themselves,” said Dr. Natta. “Every event on this calendar, from a quiet memorial service to a joyous night of dance, asks us to make that same choice again — to believe in who we are and in what we can still become, together.”
