Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 7, 2026 (PMO) – As students across St. Kitts and Nevis return to classrooms for the start of the 2026–2027 academic year, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has issued a strong call for students, teachers, parents and communities to embrace the new school year with renewed purpose, determination and a shared commitment to educational excellence.
Delivering his Back-to-School Address under the theme “Learn Today; Lead Tomorrow,” Dr. Hanley welcomed students and educators back to school, describing the new academic year as one filled with fresh experiences and opportunities to learn, grow and develop into future leaders.
“This 2026–2027 school year brings with it new experiences and many opportunities to learn, to grow, and to lead. I expect every child, every student, from preschool to college, to embrace the educational opportunities afforded to them,” the Acting Prime Minister stated.
He reminded students that the work they undertake in the classroom today serves as preparation for the responsibilities and opportunities that await them in the future.
“Students, every lesson you master, every challenge you overcome, is preparing you to lead, in and out of your classrooms. School is your training ground for life. Embrace its challenges and do not allow disappointments or failures to deter you from trying,” Dr. Hanley said.
The Minister of Education also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to creating an education system that supports the academic, social and emotional development of every student. He said educators and administrators remain committed to continually improving teaching methods and subject expertise, creating safe and supportive learning environments, encouraging creativity and independent problem-solving, and serving as positive role models for young people.
Dr. Hanley also welcomed the establishment of the first St. Kitts Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, describing it as a historic milestone and a new era of collaboration between parents and teachers. He said the Council will help to strengthen schools, amplify the voices of parents and ensure that partnership remains central to the education system.
As the new academic year gets underway, the Acting Prime Minister called on students to pursue excellence, discipline and respect; teachers to continue inspiring and nurturing young minds; parents to remain engaged and supportive; and communities to provide the encouragement and resources necessary for schools to thrive.
“Education is not the responsibility of one group alone. It is the collective duty of us all,” Dr. Hanley stated.
He concluded by encouraging all stakeholders to embrace the message “Learn Today; Lead Tomorrow” and to work together toward building a brighter, stronger and more enlightened future for St. Kitts and Nevis.
