ST. KITTS AND NEVIS JOINS THE REST OF THE WORLD IN OBSERVING THE 76TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNITED NATIONS DAY

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 25, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – St. Kitts and Nevis joined the global community in observing the 76^th anniversary of United Nations (UN) Day on Sunday, October 24, 2021.
 
UN Day is observed on October 24 every year since 1948. The observation marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. The UN Charter is the founding document of the non-partisan institution that has been working towards global peace and equality.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said United Nations Day reminds us of the value and importance of collective action and the relevance of the institution.
 
“We honour the commitment of all member states and their dedication towards developing innovative approaches and transformative actions to address global issues in a transparent, predictable and sustainable manner. One area worth highlighting is the progress being made globally toward the 2030 SDGs. Collectively, we are on track, and notable progress is being made. However, we also need to be reflective and face up to where accelerated action needs to be taken,” said Prime Minister Harris.  
 
The St. Kitts and Nevis prime minister noted also that over the past 76 years the United Nations has demonstrated its robustness and adaptability to issues and crises as they arise.
 
He said, “In relation to the fight against COVID-19, it is essential that the United Nations continues to work closely with its membership to ensure vaccines, PPE and other medical products are made available and accessible to all countries, especially the most vulnerable ones. Indeed, this is of significant importance to Caribbean nations like St. Kitts and Nevis, in light of our high vulnerability to any mass outbreaks of the virus that can quickly overwhelm the citizenry, given our limited resources.”
 
Dr. Harris added that the observation of the 76^th anniversary of United Nations Day comes just weeks after the formal establishment of the UN Resident Coordination Office and the recruitment of the UN Country Coordination Officer for St. Kitts and Nevis in the person of Mr. Cosbert Woods.
 
“This is an excellent opportunity to enhance the United Nations’ presence and impact on the ground right here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” the prime minister said. “It will bring the global community directly into our homes. Our residents will see the real benefits of being an active part of the global community.”
 
Locally, the UN Resident Coordination Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a flag raising ceremony at the National Heroes Park in observation of the 76^th anniversary of United Nations Day.
